Adventure: Absolutely

The adventure in the Sacred Valley will start with a pick-up from your hotel in Cusco and a drive for about an hour to Cruz Pata, where we will begin our biking tour. Your guide will provide you with all the safety gear and instructions. Then we ride down to the valley, following the bus road, until we reach the spot where you will get a spectacular view of the Urubamba range and the green land of Maras. We continue towards the Moray Inca Complex, where we will visit and learn about the famous Inca farming laboratory. Then we ride to Maras, where we will have lunch and explore the colonial town. Following our adventure, we ride down to the salt mines of Maras, where you will be amazed at the thousands of pools from which the locals extract natural salt. Finally, we will keep riding to Pichingoto village, where our bus will be waiting for us.

To begin our biking day tour, we will collect you from your hotel located in Cusco and drive about an hour following the route to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. We will arrive at Cruz Pata at 3600m (11811ft), where we’ll begin our activity. Your adventure guide will provide you all the biking gears (Helmet, gloves, body armor, kneepads). Then he will provide the safety talk, followed by the instructions, before we begin our cycling tour. The route begins with a little descent through picturesque Andean villages, where children are playing in the streets and you will be available to interact with them. After 30 minutes of cycling, we will arrive at the view point of Maras, where you can enjoy the snow-capped mountains in front of you: Chicon, Veronica, and Halancoma. Then we follow our route, descending gradually to the Moray archaeological site between local farmlands, where you can also see some donkeys and sheep—a perfect moment to capture photos. Moray is a great place to explore; we need to pay the entrance ticket of S/70 Peruvian soles (in case you decide to explore it). We will visit the Incan sites, and you are sure to be blown away by the unique formation of the place that many liken to an amphitheater or even something extraterrestrial. However, it is actually a gigantic Inca agriculture laboratory. Your guide will fill you in on the site’s history, and you will have plenty of time to explore and snap some photos. Then we will keep riding towards Maras, where we will enjoy our delicious lunch with a great view of the Sacred Valley. After this we will continue to Salt mines cycling in a route going down through the valley for around 40 minutes, afterwards we will arrive to the view point of this, where you’ll enjoy the stunning views and learn about the way how they are collecting this salt. The place has produced salt since ancient times, and there are more than 3,000 pools of salt that are filled daily with groundwater. You will have a surreal landscape at your disposal to capture incredible photos. We will continue to Pichingoto, where our van will be waiting for us to return to Cusco.

The weather in Cusco regions and part of the Andes is unpredictable even if the weather forecast says it’s sunny, we can’t trust in it. It is an impossible question for us to answer. Historically April through September is the dry season, November through February is the rainy season and March and October and bridge months - a mixture of both. But the clouds have not followed these rules in the last few years. Prepare for sun and rain no matter when you come. As far as temperatures go, that is consistent throughout the year. Mornings and evenings are always cold. Make sure to bring a fleece jacket for the mornings and a down jacket for the evenings. Once the sun is up you should be comfortable hiking in short sleeves. Long pants (yoga or hiking) are encouraged to help from the mosquitos which can be a nuisance in some part of the trail.
